woodpeckeracornbirdWoodpecker (Picidae) which is from a large family of climbing birds found in most parts of the world. Woodpeckers have chisel like bills for pecking holes in tree trunks , and long, extensible tongues which they impale their insect prey.

Having spiny tail feathers they act as props when climbing resting , and drilling. Most males have red or orange patches on the head and barred and spotted black or brown plumage with light underparts. In North America the Downy woodpecker is (six and a half inches long), the larger hairy woodpecker; the red crested pileated woodpecker or logcock , about 17 in. long, which is similar to the nearly extinct ivory billed woodpecker; the red headed and three toed woodpeckers; and the California woodpecker, which makes small holes in trees for store and acorns.

Other species include the flickers, the only brown backed woodpeckers , sometimes capture insects on the ground. The yellow shafted flicker is known like; high hole , yellow hammer , and into breeds with the Red shafted flicker. The sapsuckers like; the red breasted and yellow bellied sapsuckers, may damage and kill trees by girdling them through which they eat some of the cambium and drink sap ; they also eat ants and wild fruits.
