Seal Aquatic carnivorous mammal. Pinnipedia , there are three families consisting of , the eared fur seals and sea lions (Otariidae ) the true, earless , or hair seals (Phocidae) ; and the walrus (0dobenidae).
True seals include the harbor, ringed, Greenland, gray, hooded, ribbon, bearded, bladdernose , elephant , and Lake Baikal seals ; these having short coarse hair and no external ears. Moving on land is awkward and slow because their front and hind limbs are modified as flippers. Their hind limbs on directed backwards.
Eskimos have depended for centuries on seal as a source of food, oil, hides for boats, and other conveniences. The eared seals progress better on land because their hind limbs , their ears are small and external . The Alaskan fur seals, or sea bears, spend their winter along the Alaskan peninsula and further south to the northern coast of California and to the breeding grounds on Pribliof Islands.
During the months of April or May the mature males (six years older) establish themselves with the females thats arrive a month later , and create harems on the beaches. At this point the single pups from the previous year of mating are born , and then mating occurs again.
While guarding their harems the males fast for more than a month while the females swim out to the feeding grounds and return regularly to suckle their young . The mature males up to three years in age heard apart from the others. |
