Pelican, large, gregarious and aquatic bird of warm regions, related to the gannets and Cormorants. They have heavy bodies, long necks with large, flat bills. Being graceful swimmers and fliers, there often seen flying in lines or circling at great heights.
Pelicans store fish in a steep expandable pouch below the lower mandible ; their young feed from the pouch and throat. In North America the white pelican ranges from the North West United States to the Gulf and Florida coasts. It is about 5 ft. long with a wingspan of 8 to 10 ft.. The plumage of both sexes is white with blacks primary wing feathers. While swimming its scoops fish into its pouch; the small brown pelican dives from the air for its prey. The brown pelican ranging in the southeast United States and tropical America and the California brown pelican are strictly ocean birds.
The spectacle pelican is found in Australia and New Guinea. There is also several old world species. |
