Otter Carnivorous and aquatic mammal belonging to the weasel family, found on all continents except Australia. The slender body of the otter of North America is about three and a half to four half feet long (smaller in the female) including the long tail. It has a flattened head and, its legs are short, and its hind feet are webbed.
Being an agile swimmer, it hunts in streams and lakes for crawfish, along the banks of which it makes its burrow. Its diet also consists of small mammals and birds.
The Otter is a playful animal; groups have been seen playing " follow the leader, " sliding down mud banks, or tobogganing in the snow. Its fur is thick and brown and a soft under coat with underlying glossy guard hairs. |
