Horned toad, insectivorous lizard, several species of which live in the deserts of Southwest United States and Mexico. They have spines on the head, and scales on the sides and back are large and sharp .

They have broad fat bodies that measure 3 to 5 in. long; it has a tail that is short and thin and short legs. Horned toads are protectively colored usually in dull grays and browns. when alarmed some species in defense eject a thin jet of blood from the eye .
