hartebeestantelopeHartebeest Several species of large African antelopes of the genus Bubalis . The bubal hartebeest, formerly abundant in North Africa .

Its coat is fawn all reddish, ring horns curving in a U shape and stands about three and a half feet at the shoulder. The larger red or Cape hartebeest is found in South Africa in reduced numbers.

The blesbok, the bontebok, and the members of the genus Dameliscus are also called hartebeests.
