The connochaetes gnu , white tailed gnu or black wildebeest , are shy animals once common in numbers in the wild , is now believed to be extinct in the wild States but preserved some farms and zoological Gardens. It is dark brown or blackish; the male stands about 4 ft. high at the shoulder.

Gorgon taurinus, the brindled gnu or blue wildebeest, is larger. and is bluish gray mottled with brown on the sides it is found in greatly reduced herds.
