Civet The Civet cat, mammal from the family of Viverridae, related to the cats and native to Asia and Africa. The fur is a dull gray with streaks and spots of black, the face looks like that of the weasel. It is mainly nocturnal.

The Civet is hunted and also kept in captivity for a fatty yellow secretion found in a double punch near the genitals. This material is removed is used in the Orient for a perfume base.

The fur of the Indian Civet of India and South East Asia, Chinese Civet, is used as trimming. The little spotted skunk of North America is incorrectly called Civet cat.
