Black snake Name applied to several snakes of this colour. The black racer is a non poisonous snake of the east United States. It is from 5 to 6 ft. long with the black, dull scales .

It travels swiftly and climbs small trees and bushes; it feeds on birds and their eggs, on frogs, and other snakes. Sometimes confused with the black racer the pilot black snake or mountain black snake of the North East United States.

Unlike the black racer, it is a constrictor preying on rats. It has shiny, slightly keeled scales and reaches a length of 8 ft.. The poisonous Australian black snake has a hood like the related Cobra and is about 5 ft. long .
